Well, we’re well into the winter season, even though it’s still autumn, and the cool weather is creeping in, including the odd dust storm, but still no rain to really speak of. Despite this, the course is looking great.
The Carter Quality Meat Trophy finished off the last month, 31st March, but hadn’t been played when the last report was submitted, so congratulations to John Dawes for winning that Par comp with +1. He actually came second but a visitor, C. Grundel, won the day with +3. As he was a visitor, he’s ineligible to win the main prize, so when he returns, he’ll be presented with some pro v balls and a Barmera Golf Cap. Steve Morrell and Tyson Swanbury came next, square with the card.
A small field played on the Easter Monday holiday-Stroke. Matt Starkey won the day with a net 71 and Jordan Wright second with net 73. This was for a club trophy.
The next Saturday, 7th April, was a Stableford round for the Dennis Hodgson trophywhich was taken out by Tyson Swanbury with 40 points. R. Formiatti, E.V. Hensbergen & P. Keane followed with 38 points.
Saturday 14th April was the next monthly medal round playing for the Carpet Cleaning Man Trophy in a stroke comp. Unfortunately, the numbers were down due to the high winds, however, 28 players braved the weather and had a crack. A Grade saw Tyson Swanbury win with net 73, followed by Kym Sampson net 74. In the B Grade, Dave Hastwell won with a net 68. The wind must have corrected slices. Second for B’s was David Agg & Ian Girdler with net 73. All this said, Dave Hastwell’s score earned him the privilege cup until the next monthly medal day, so, hopefully you’ll all shout a refill of the cup for Dave before the next cup round. The Legend of the Month for March was also presented, even though the recipient wasn’t here for it, and that went to Peter Fisher for the outstanding, 47 Stableford point win on the 17th April. Thanks to Riverland Skips () for supplying $20 club vouchers for the Legend of the Month for this year. Today was also the 1st qualifying round for the Brian Frost Handicap Match play. In your program, you may have noticed there was to be a Scotland v Germany challenge as well. Unfortunately, this did not take place as it was decided because there was so much going on around the club, we’ll have the challenge later in the year. As I have said previously, it’ll give you all time to decide whether you wish to be a tongue rolling, skirt wearing Scot, or an inventive, reliable, vee haf vays of making you talk, German.
Saturday 21st was the 2 person Ambrose day, sponsored by Ken & Craig Moore. It was a nice change and a bit of fun than the regular Saturday comps. This was won by the unlikely dynamic duo of Chris McLoughlin and Matt Starkey with 61.25 points. Second was Twisty Martin & Michael Eisner with 64.50. Thanks again to the Moories for sponsoring the day.
Saturday 28th April was the Coca Cola Amatil Trophy day-Stableford. It was also the 2ndround of the Morrell Clan Shield. 36 players took the fairways and the outstanding score of the day went to Steve (I think I can win my own shield) Morrell with 41 points. The next best went to Tyson Swanbury on 38 points. Surprisingly, no par 3 birdies for the day, but Tyson did have a few on some others.
The hole in one remains on $1000.
A big thanks again to all those sponsors for the month. Without them we’d only be winning boring Barmera dollars, although they have proved to be quite useful on the bar. I urge any winners to please thank the sponsors and urge all our members to please support the businesses that support our club.
Kicking off the month of May on Saturday 5th, is the Pump Doctor Trophy aka Rob Formiatti-Stableford.
A reminder to all that the Barmera Open is about six weeks away, and I encourage you all to bring a friend or two to enjoy a weekend on our fabulous course.
